Recently, we joined with www.richmondmom.com in a contest to see what everyone is doing to go green this summer. We were so wowed by some of the entries, we thought we'd post them both here and richmondmom (though they will be announcing the winners, soon, very soon!)
Check out these great ideas, and see if you're doing these things, might start doing some, and as always, let us know if there's something that you're doing we've not listed here!
| We are going to the pool, playing golf, fishing, hiking and camping and biking. Going green is truly about enjoying and utilizing the outdoors. We must appreciate the wonder of nature given to us by God. |

I'm encouraging the girls to return their plastic spoons and juice bottles from camp each day by giving them a wooden "sticker" for their magnet boards. The stickers then get exchanged for quarters that become oh, so coveted "ICE CREAM MONEY"! The items get washed and used again instead of cluttering up the landfills. And, I have 2 little girls who are more "green" for this little initiative. Karen Taylor Davis

Our biggest green success has come from our kitchen compost can. We throw everything in it: food waste, coffee grounds & filters, paper towels. We have been filling about a can per day and then it goes right outside into "the heap". I am amazed at how rich the dirt is! Lesli Johnson

We are growing vegetables in our garden, participating in a CSA, composting and recycling. We are using stuff around the house for craft projects instead of buying new supplies. It helps the environment and eliminates some of the clutter. YAY! Kimberly Carswell
Yes I shake them out in the toilet and hang them dry after we wash them and yes they make my little girl look like she has a round booty but there are fewer diapers in the landfill now! Cindi Finley We are going green this summer several ways. I have 2 kids who are both in cub scouts. So our summer project is recycling cans and newspaper, we take the cans to our den leader and the newspaper to our local public school because recycling facilities are not in our neighborhood. We are also drinking from BPA free bottles made from recycled materials and bottles that are more eco friendly like metal even when we are home we wash and reuse them. When we hike we take a bag with us to pick up trash others leave behind. Now when when we grocery shop we use our own bags from home. We keep the windows shut and the temperature fixed in the 70's and my cooling bill was $48 in June. We don't throw away things that can be reused, or regifted as we call it. Even items as simple as toys. I talk about with my kids what it means to be biodegradable, so they understand where our trash goes and what happens to it when it leave our house. Kristal Bennett
One thing I've done this summer is to recycle cool whip containers. I've made a lot of dishes with them. This summer has been great for letting my son Sawyer go outside and paint. The cool whip containers have been the perfect containers for holding paint and for helping to clean the paint brushes. We think going green is the new black. LOL! Shelly McCabe
For our effort to go green we are tyring to spread the word about these great environmentally friendly diapers that we have discovered. I am allergic to fragrance so in my efforts to avoid artificial and chemical fragrances, I stumbled upon gGiapers. These diapers have inserts that can be flushed, composted, or just thrown away and they will not stick around in landfills like regular disposable diapers will. They also have a cloth option making them a hybrid. You can use cloth inserts at home and then the flushies while out an about and you can throw them away with no guilt. The cloth covers have a nylon liner that allows these fiapers to be breathable, which helps to cut down on diaper rash issues too. I love all the colors of the cloth covers. There is one with a ruffle on the tush that I love to put on my daughter-even if it is pink! I have signed up to be a gMum and spread the word about these great diapers. Michela Worthington-Adams I am not sure if I should include this but if you want to get this info out feel free. gDiapers.com currently has a six pack of the covers on sale for $30 off the regular $70 price. It includes 3 vanilla bean and 3 great orange diaper covers each with a liner and one swish stick for the flushies (not included). The code to use is g584Worthington-Adams (this is case sensitive). It is good through 31 July 2009. I admit I do have an alterior motive for getting this out, if enough people use my code I may win a trip to Portland. Can't get more fun than that! Tammy Harrison
Any thoughts? Any additions? Anyone you think should be the clear winner?? |
